WEEPING FIG

FICUS BENJAMINA

Perhaps one of the most diverse of the Ficus family, the Weeping Fig gets its name from the narrow, arrow-like leaves that line the delicate woody stems. This is a great plant for beginners, but remember that with Ficus benjamina, much like a larger tree, the leaves will drop in winter, which is normal. There are many different variations of this plant: the variegated with beautiful pale green and white leaves, the Ficus benjamina ‘Baroque’ with twisted and spiralled leaves, and the standard Ficus benjamina with its narrow and pointed rich, dark, glossy green leaves.

LIGHT:

The Weeping Fig will enjoy basking in a few hours of morning sun, but move it before the sun gets too strong, and keep away from the afternoon sun. It can adapt to most conditions though so if you don’t have much light then this will be fine as well.

WATER:

Water moderately through the warmer summer months, making sure to allow the compost to dry out in between waterings as the roots do not like sitting in damp compost. Misting is essential as if it gets too dry the leaves will start to fall.

REPOTTING:

Repot this plant every two years in the spring. You can continue to repot until the plant gets too large to handle! You can also train your plant as a bonsai: although it will take a lot of time to prune and wire, it can be one of the most fulfilling approaches to keeping a Weeping Fig.
